Hi, friend. Happy Sunday to ya. 🤗

Oh! — do you remember last Labor Day? Not sure if I shared this on the blog last year, but during the annual Novato Labor Day parade, while Rosie was officiating and leading the Novato NASA chapter’s float to introduce cats and kittens to the space program and promote the value of STEM, there was a HUGE robbery.

The Dread Pirate Picklebeak, the most wicked woodpecker in all of Novato, robbed the Marin County Cat Credit Union. 😮

It happened right under everyone’s noses while they were enjoying the parade.

Yup, it was a big scandal. The crooks made off with a million dollars in diamonds and forty pounds of kibble!

And they never caught Picklebeak either.

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 827

I sure hope nothing crazy happens like that again this year. Labor Day is one of Rosie’s favorite holidays, and she just wants to celebrate hard work and unwind with friends and family for a day. 😊

Big news around these parts—your niece aka my little Coywolf started third grade. Her first day was on Thursday, and I’m happy to report that she came home all smiles and excited about class and her new teacher. She’s already made a new friend and had an “epic playdate” that involved not one, not two, not three, but four cats. FOUR CATS! Side note, there’s no way that Tabs would’ve let that fly. LOL. I miss that fool cat every day.

First Day of Third Grade!

Fingers and toes crossed that this will be a good year for her. I’m hoping for lots of positive interactions with classmates and for less girl drama.

Yup, there’s cliques and alliances already, sigh. Crazy to think that this is happening in the third grade, but perhaps it’s normal and I had no idea?

I’m curious to know what it was like for you, or for your kids if you have them, in elementary school.

In my class I remember there were the girls who were considered “the pretty girls,” but I was very unaware of social standings and wasn’t too interested in whatever was going on. I guess I was too busy trying to fade into the background and stay under the radar. Perhaps that cluelessness was one of the unknown perks of being severely under-parented and left to my own devices, ha ha ha!

Oh! When I left Connor in her classroom, I was very surprised to not be hit by that wave of emotion that usually drops after I say goodbye to her and walk away. This time, I felt pretty good, like I knew she was going to be OK and that she’d be steady enough to handle whatever would come her way

Perhaps I’m learning, slowly but surely, the inevitable task of letting her go into the world. Maybe we’re both growing up.

Now that she’s back in school and the chaos of summer camp scheduling is in my rear view mirror, I’m hoping to get back on a steady writing schedule again. I don’t know when this happened, but I desperately crave consistency, especially when it comes to everyday scheduling. The uncertainty impacts everything else, including writing. I’m hoping next month will be easier to sit down at the keyboard to babble on about lord knows what, LOL! It’s just fun to have the time to write, you know?

Happy Saturday to you!

9 Things Beauty Lovers Should Never Feel Guilty About

  1. Buying the same lipstick color over and over again but in different finishes because yes, I need the same pinkish nude in matte lipstick *and* lipgloss forms.
  2. Spending a seemingly exorbitant time contemplating bangs. Hey, it’s a major lifestyle change and not to be taken lightly.
  3. Having an army of shampoos and conditioners in the tub/shower. Sometimes your roots need clarifying and sometimes they don’t.
  4. Using 2-3 mascaras just to leave the house! When I was a makeup maximalist, I had a tube specifically for curl and length, another for volume, and another tube just for my lower lashes. There’s something kinda magical about mascara with a very specialized purpose.
  5. Never, ever finishing a bottle of perfume, ever.
  6. Going through a phase when you don’t want to wear a lot of makeup.
  7. Going through a phase when you do want to wear all the makeup and then some.
  8. Carrying around multiple sunscreens. Side note, right now in my purse I have two, both by Shiseido – the liquid one in the blue bottle and the solid form in the stick (I like it for my hands and my arms when I’m in a hurry).
  9. Unabashedly staring at a stranger who’s clearly spent a lot of time and care painting their face and then complimenting them on a job well done. Makeup is an art, and I love seeing people wear their art in everyday life!

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 844

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007).

1. What would you rather be great at: finding good deals, arriving on time, navigating or mental math?

I could use a little help with all of these things, ha! Let’s go with finding good deals.

2. Who is your biggest supporter?

El hub. He’s seen me through many dreams chased!

3. Claw clip or hair tie?

Hair tie, black, stretchy.

4. I am too old to [FILL IN THE BLANK]?

Deal with nonsense. Do any physical activity without a warmup, lol. *Not* draw boundaries.

5. Your ice cream truck treat of choice from back in the day?

I always like the popsicles that were red, white and blue. Drumsticks were a fave, too!

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 826

On the first day of the Festival of Fabulousness, ruthless bandits of the Rodentia Trashpandia gang fell upon the royal carriage carrying Queen Karenina and Princess Coco on the road to town. Not only were the queen and princess in peril, but the carriage also carried the kingdom’s precious collection of bedazzled dance costumes! 🌟👗

As luck would have it, two Knights of the Tender Turkey rushed to their aid!

With the help of a squire squirrel and his finch friend Fabian, who happened to be on their way to the festival at the time, the trio of furry fighters and their tiny winged companion sent the bandits scurrying and saved the day.

Huzzah! 🤗

What Are Your Go-To Face/Base Products?

I’d love to hear your take on why you love your foundation, tinted moisturizer, powder, concealer, etc, because this gal needs to do some makeup shopping STAT.

For the first time in months, I’ve felt the urge to wear makeup again, hooray!

A little background: I’ve been going uber-minimalist for the past few months, and I’ve whittled my daily beauty routine down significantly. I do a tinted sunscreen with SPF 50, cream blush, under eye color corrector, a brow pencil and mascara on most days. Oh, and setting spray, of course.

A couple weeks ago, though, I got the urge to dig out my Charlotte Tilbury Beautiful Skin Foundation tinted moisturizer and some powder blush and, gasp! It felt REALLY good to wear it. Who knows? Maybe a return to a full-face of paint is in the cards for me in the near future.

I think that’s the beauty of makeup. It’s always there for you to come back to it, if and when you want to do so.

Anywho, enough of my rambling. Tell me ALL ABOUT your go-to base products.

I’m excited to hear about them!

P.S. Happy Saturday! We’re spending a quiet weekend at home after last week’s camping adventure. Today, I’m going to take Connor to an end-of-the-summer dive event, and then we’re doing a little bit of window shopping for school. Have a great day!

7 Things Beauty Lovers Don’t Want to Be Asked
Nope!
  1. Do you really need another lipstick?
  2. Why do you wear so much makeup?
  3. Why do you want bangs?
  4. Do you really need to carry “all that stuff” in your purse just to leave the house?
  5. How much did you spend on your hair?
  6. What the heck is the point of wearing perfume?
  7. What happened to your eyebrows?
  8. Did you unplug the flat iron/curling iron? (Side note: I always unplug it, but inevitably if El Hub asks me this question and we’re on the road, I’ll make him drive back so I can double check it, otherwise I’ll whip myself into a frenzy wondering if I did.)
  9. Do you really need to wear sunscreen when we’re not at the beach?

Karen

What Scents Are in Your Rotation Right Now?
Currently in rotation!

I’ve only got one at the moment (unless you count my deodorant, ha). It’s Gabrielle Chanel L’Eau, a light, breezy floral with tuberose from Grasse, jasmine, ylang-ylang and orange blossom. Right meow it’s the purr-fect summer scent for me.

What scents are in your rotation right now?

Among turkey circles, he was known as the terror of Mt. Tam. Tabs was infamous as a killer of…careers among turkey models, because he had no patience for imperfection when it came to working with other models, whether feline, human, avian or otherwise.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, he worked on many modeling campaigns with turkeys.

His affinity for turkeys was multifaceted. He loved everything about them and found them both fascinating and delicious.

Rosie

Rosie, on the other hand, hasn’t worked with any turkeys yet, but she does find them to be interesting. Today on her walk, she followed a gang of them around the hill. She pretended to not notice them but nonchalantly got progressively closer and closer until they were 10 feet away. She tried to play it cool, but when one of the larger turkeys stood up tall and flapped its wings, probably as a signal to Rosie to “step off,” Rosie flipped out and ran all the way back to the front door.

She’s not quite there yet in terms of having a full on conversation with them.

Maybe soon, though.

As for Marnie…she hasn’t figured out what to think about turkeys yet. She knows they’re large, they’re loud, and they are most probably not dogs.

Beyond that, though? Not quite sure. 🙂

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 843

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007).

1. Something you need to buy for yourself that isn’t beauty related?

Shoes. I’ve been waking up with sore and cranky arches, so it’s time! I can’t believe there was a time in my life when I could wear whatever footwear and get up in the morning with happy feet. It’s wild to me!

2. Colors in your wardrobe that you wear the most?

I wear a ton of blue, gray and black. Honestly, I’m not crazy about that particular palette; it’s just that I bought a bunch of basics in those colors a while back, and sticking to just a few different colors makes it easier to get dressed in the morning. I have some pink, red and yellow items up in the mix, too, which I enjoy wearing.

3. Pick a sport you’d like to be amazing at: speed walking, high jump, wrestling or diving?

For practicality’s sake, I guess wrestling? At least that way if I ever found myself in a hand-to-hand grappling situation, I’d have a chance at getting out of it.

4. Where are you from?

California, baby! Specifically the East Bay, although I haven’t lived there in a really long time. I guess I could say I’m from Marin county since I’ve lived here for almost 20 years, but I don’t feel like I’m “from” here. I’ve always felt like a transplant.

5. Current mood?

A little sleepy but otherwise good. I really want to have a smooth, positive week, as it’s Connor’s last full week of summer before school starts again. It went by in a flash!
